<image:title>About - Backstory</image:title>
<image:caption>Like communities across the country last year, Serenbe felt the impact of George Floyd's murder. You could read about it on our Facebook pages, see it in the signs and flags that went up around the neighborhood, and hear about it in conversations everywhere. That moment spurred a group of residents to explore what part Serenbe had to play in a national racial reckoning, and to ensure that we turned what we learned into lasting positive change for our community.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - The Project</image:title>
<image:caption>As a way to affirm Serenbe’s culture and shared values, this art project will serve as a visual and intentional declaration of welcome and affirmation to visitors and residents who identify as Black. Our hope is that while elevating and supporting Black artists, this project will open up our cultural space and spark curiosity and dialogue about the Black experience in Serenbe.</image:caption>

<image:title>Dr. Tina Dunkley - Dr. Tina Dunkley</image:title>
<image:caption>Tina Dunkley’s service in the arts includes 35 years as Curator and Director of the Clark Atlanta University Art Galleries. Daughter of West Indian parents and granddaughter of Jamaican artist John Dunkley, whose work hangs in Kingston’s National Gallery, Tina Dunkley has maintained a professional career as an artist throughout her tenure as an arts administrator, curator, writer, and educator. Inspired by the struggles of African descendants displaced throughout the Western Hemisphere, her work explores the experience and politics of denial that informs much of the history of the Americas. She has stated that her work is “influenced by the full-circle recognition of her ancestors’ journey through slavery five generations ago.” Tina’s Awards have included Atlanta Printmakers Studio Emerging Printmaker Artist-in-Residency (2017), Women’s Caucus for Art Lifetime Achievement Award, (2014), and a Travel Grant to Pernambuco, Brazil, from the Georgia Partners of the Americas (2001), among others. Tina’s work can be found in collections at the High Museum of Art, Nexus Contemporary Arts Center (Women’s Walk), Marriott Marquis Hotel, Delta Airlines, Hartsfield Airport, Hyundai, AT&T, IBM, Atlanta Life Insurance Company, Hammonds House Art Galleries, Thacker Construction Company, Georgia State Art Collection, And Fulton County Arts Council. She has also danced with Katherine Dunham’s troupe and is a talented songstress. Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.</image:caption>

He has been featured in network broadcast television and written media. In addition to giving presentations to the National Black MBA Association Annual Conference on investing and collecting African American art in 2005; he was quoted in the Los Angeles Times in 2005; and in 2006, was quoted in BusinessWeek Magazine and the London Stock Exchange regarding the investment potential of significant African American art. As a practicing attorney, he handled cases involving nationally renowned collectors/dealers and art institutions. As a result of this involvement, his life-long interest in African American and African art was transformed into a passion for the scholarly, business-professional and investment aspects of the visual arts. “Art is a way of thinking and expression. The way an artist interprets her environment and what she seeks to express is almost necessarily a function of the artist’s individual experiences which in turn is a derived from the culture or cultures from which the artist belongs or has been exposed."</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dr. Kelli Morgan is a Professor of the Practice and the inaugural Director of Curatorial Studies at Tufts University. A curator, educator, and social justice activist who specializes in American art and visual culture, her scholarly commitment to the investigation of anti-blackness within those fields has demonstrated how traditional art history and museum practice work specifically to uphold white supremacy. Dr. Morgan has held curatorial positions at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, the Birmingham Museum of Art, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She has held teaching positions at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University, Wayne State University, and the University of Michigan where she merged the classroom and the museum gallery to create various anti-racist paradigms for how curators can actively address the complexities of traditional art history, community engagement, and scholarly innovation. In 2014, Morgan was awarded a dissertation fellowship from the Ford Foundation and earned her Ph.D. in Afro-American studies and a graduate certificate in public history–museum studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2017.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Born in Atlanta, African-American artist Gigi Wilborn has always been creative. After completing her nursing degree, Gigi briefly shifted away from her creative background in order to focus on her nursing career. She soon returned to her true love, specializing in acrylic/watercolor-based abstract and mixed media creations. Her Mixed Media pieces often draw parallels between current political topics and contains a slew of hidden messages and double entendres woven within the blankets of color. Gigi came to Serenbe in 2020 the day before the pandemic lockdown. She lives and works here, surrounded by her art, husband, and two young daughters. She is a former Goat Farm studio member and her artwork is represented by Dogwood Gallery, Kuali Studio Gallery and Chatt Hills Gallery.</image:caption>
